One thing I was never able to get to in the graphic adaptation of the novel was the part about Damien's previous faith. He was human once, and they live in Italy. As such he grew up Roman Catholic. Converted vampires are unable to step foot on holy ground without painful consequences. So Damien felt he was excommunicated from heaven, even when his turning was completely accidental (something Miranda can identify with by the way).
