No, I haven't gone squeamish on the darker aspects of this tale... but normally when I do this sort of thing we're talking about horrible things happening to adults.
I this case, we're talking about heinous things happening to children....
I'm not terribly comfortable with the idea - and I want to be respectful of my audience by keeping a lot of the up close violence/gore off the page.
