The Mosier facility, in its first heyday, definitely had a need for ensuring the dead were properly taken care of. As a research facility and underground fallout shelter, burying the dead would have been near impossible above ground. The place was designed to be completely self sufficient.
It relies on geothermal energy and natural gas deposits and underground aquifers. Everything produced is recycled or reused in some way. The dead would be no exception - most likely used to help fertilize and amend the soils used for growing food on the agricultural levels.
So the crematorium is something that played prominently in the Only Half stories. I wanted it to look well used and worn, smoothed by time and the heat of the fires it tames. I hope I attained that.
