We get the reason for Garrett's almost self-destructive attempt at healing himself. Yes, he's suffering from a degenerative nerve problem. He's really proud of his independence so it scares the hell out of him that he's starting to lose control of his body like this.
He's trying really hard to get out of meeting the family here isn't he? Gee, I wonder why?
