Cabal as a dhampir isn't like a vampire as far as his metabolism goes. Throughout the month he is perfectly capable of eating human food and metabolizing it to stay healthy. Every 25-28 days however there is a metabolic shift and he MUST consume blood.
On the opposite side of that coin, on the weeks/days that the shift is absent he cannot consume blood. His body will do what it always does when he drinks blood, break it down and feed it to his tissues - however if that shift isn't active, the act of his body feeding that blood to his tissues will make him EXTREMELY ill.
He and his mom found this out the hard way when Cabal was three and Carmen insisted that he have a blood meal when he wasn't ready for one. She nearly lost him.
He's been very careful NOT to put himself in that situation since.
Soooo... now you know. :) So Cabal is in for MORE recovery because he WILL be ill from this introduction of blood.
Miranda should know this because she was eavesdropping when Cabal told her father about the trait.
